Every young baseball player dreams about growing up to become a professional baseball player.

For former Williston High School star Andy Leer, that deam has become reality.

Leer is playing for the Elizabethton, (Tenn.) Twins in the Appalachian League. Elizabethon is rookie league affliate of the Minnesota Twins.

“It’s going good,” Leer siad. “There’s no time (to think). I just had to jump into it.”

Leer was a 25th round selection by Minnesota in last month’s Major League Baseball draft. He was selected 765th overall. “I didn’t know what to expect,” Leer said. “I didn’t talk to anybody, but the coaches and people have been nice.”

After the draft, Leer went to Florida for a rookie camp for nearly a week.

From there, Leer was assigned to the team in Tennessee.

In 25 games this season, Leer is batting .301 with two home runs and 17 RBI.

He also has nine doubles and 28 runs scored in 93 at-bats.

Defensively, Leer has had to make an adjustment to playing third base.

“It’s been a big adjustment,” Leer said. “I have played shortstop all my life. I’m learning how to play each groundball.”

Leer says he expects to play third base about 90 percent of the time from here on out.

But he hasn’t given up his old position.

“I still take groundballs at shortstop,” he said.

Though Leer started catching the eyes of scouts early on in his playing days at the University of Mary, Leer wasn’t sure what to expect leading up to the draft.

“I couldn’t say for sure I was going to be drafted and I couldn’t say for sure that I wasn’t,” he said. “It was one of those moments where you had to hope.”

Leer’s day-to-day activities are pretty routine.

“I wake up and go to the field at 2 p.m.,” he said. “We work on fundamentals and play every night. Then we go home and come back and do it the next day.”

Though away from family and friends, Leer has received a fair amount of letters encouraging him and offering support.

“I’d like to thank everybody for the support,” he said.
