Earlier Thursday, Williston rode the arm of Hanson to a 9-8, 10-inning victory over Dickinson.
CJ Vinger, who picked up the win in relief in the first game, pitched into the ninth of the second game despite control issues. He was one inning away from two wins in one day when back-to-back walks in the ninth led Williston coach Chip Devlin to lift him for Hanson, who threw 6.1 innings of the tourney opener.
After allowing a bunt single to load the bases with no outs, Hanson got Alex Deyle on a fielder's choice and Erik Peterson on a sacrifice fly to right.
Leapaldt then lined a shot to left that went to the wall, scoring Tom Keller and Deyle. Devlin lamented the Keybirds' control problems. Of the Governors' 10 runs, five reached by walk, one by fielder's choice and two by error.
"That's been a menace since day one," Devlin said. "We put them on and then struggle to get our outs. We just gave them too many chances. It doesn't work against a good team like that."
Jordan Kenner took away the Keybirds' opportunities when he came on in relief to start the seventh with Bismarck down 9-6. Kenner gave up one hit, struck out seven and walked none in three innings. He struck out the last five batters he faced, giving Bismarck a chance.
Vinger went eight innings, walking nine and striking out six. He got James Carroll and Keller three times each. In two games, Vinger threw 221 pitches
Five of Bismarck's first seven runs were unearned through eight innings.
Williston, which is guaranteed a berth in next weekend's state tournament, plays the loser of Thursday's late game between Mandan and Dickinson today at 4:30 p.m.. Teams in the loser's bracket are now playing for seeding.
"We just want to play well and get ready for state," Devlin said.
Oliver Sogard had three hits and Jeff Beckman, Hanson and Vinger had two hits each against the Governors.
Jon Westphal homered for the second straight game and Derrick Linghor drove in three runs.
Peterson had three hits and drove in four runs for Bismarck and Carson Wentz drove in three.
Hanson's pitching and Westphal's hitting in the tournament opener led the Keybirds to a 9-8 win over Dickinson Thursday morning.
Hanson and his coaches had an agreement. Hanson wouldn't pitch against Dickinson Thursday at the West Division Legion baseball tournament except in an emergency.
A six-run third inning by Dickinson against two Williston pitchers was the emergency the Keybirds hoped to avoid.
Hanson's pitching over the next six innings and John Westphal's game-winning single with one out in the 10th inning lifted the
Keybirds to a 9-8 win over Dickinson and earned them a trip to the state tournament.
Westphal was 4-for-6 with a homer, a double off the scoreboard and three runs batted in. He lined a two-out single to left off Dickinson reliever Taylor Kraenzel to plate Beckman with the winning run. Beckman reached on a single — his third hit of the game — and later moved to third on a wild pitch.
Westphal had a chance to end the game in the ninth but he popped to third to lead off the inning. "I wasn't too happy about that," he said. "I just wanted to put it in play and hopefully it went through. We worked hard for this one."
The Keybirds led 3-0 before Dickinson exploded in the third. Starter Connor Long was lifted with one out having given up four hits and plunking a couple of batters. He was charged with six earned runs.
Cory Vinger relieved and lasted one-third of an inning before Hanson was summoned and struck out Brodie Candrian.
Westphal said the Keybirds weren't overwhelmed by the inning. "We looked at it and figured we still had seven at-bats," he said.
Hanson went 6.1 innings and gave up two unearned runs. He struck out 10 and walked two. CJ Vinger pitched the 10th inning, walking three and striking out two to get the win.
"Coaches asked if I could pitch in an emergency," said Hanson, who has battled some shoulder soreness. "I said 'absolutely.' I couldn't set back and watch anymore of that happen. I wanted the ball."
Devlin said Hanson did just what the team needed him to do.
"That's what you need out of a pitcher, stop the momentum immediately," Devlin said. "He's experienced enough to handle that well.
"The original plan was for Connor and Cory to finish this game for us ... but things didn't work out," Devlin added. "Alex was going to go as far as he thought he could go. We he got to 100 pitches we told him we had to make a move."
The Keybirds got a two-homer from Westphal in the fifth and a two-run homer from Beckman in the sixth. They tied it on Derrick Linghor's double off the wall in the sixth and it stayed tied into the 10th.
Dickinson escaped a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the ninth when Evan Conlin hit a screaming liner to Roughriders' first-baseman Tevin Papineau, who doubled off Jacob Brokaw.
